The P-30 event is sanctioned by the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA), and although originally intended as an entry level event for rubber powered free flight, it has become very popular. The rules are simple; Model dimensions for wing span and length may not exceed 30", the minimum weight without rubber motor is 40 grams (1.4 oz), the weight of the rubber motor may not exceed 10 grams, and the propeller must be a commercially available plastic freewheeling between 23 and 25 centimeters in diameter (9.05 and 9.84 inches). Contest winner is highest time of 3 official flights, with a 120 second maximum per flight . Any flight over 20 seconds is official.

| Originally designed around the KIWI Plan, this competitive P-30 has taken on characteristics of it's own. With a swept back/low ratio taperedwing the KIWI-30 has proven to be an excellent 'windy weather' competitor. |

 |
| The basic BMJR Ugly-30 started as a rubber powered sport free flight becoming a summer project for some 7 year old boys. Several versions were built with the configuration in this kit being the final. It is a very stable, easy to trim school yard flyer. With a 30” wingspan, 9” prop and 10 gram rubber motor, it meets AMA P-30 rules, It is not intended to be a competitive model, However during the summer of 1999 the model was very popular with the local kids and spurred some interesting school yard competitions. (ever try Free Flight combat pulling a streamer?) These photo illustrated Instructions address details for building and flying a rubber powered model, which is an excellent choice as a first model project for anyone. Everything, except the glue and covering, is in the box ready to produce that first rubber powered free flight experience. |
| Speckled-P-30 |
B-509 |
 |
| The original Baby-Speckled Bird was designed by George Perryman and flown to a first place in P-30 at the 1978 Nat's with a time on 11 min, 13 sec. The BMJR Speckled-P30 is based on this original design in plan form but has been scaled up slightly to a 28” wingspan, with 134 sq. in. of area, and 30” fuselage length. The distinctive Speckled Bird lines have been retained but the structure has been changed to accommodate laser cutting technology for ease of construction, and to reduce weight where ever possible to achieve the 40 gram target weight of this larger model. |
