Nostalgia

Nostalgia Free Flight is to be a casual affair sanctioned by the National Free Flight Society (NFFS) for the enjoyment of all those who wish to build and fly models designed between 1943 and 1956. These BMJR Nostalgia kits may be built and powered by a .049 engine for class 1/2 A competition or a .051 for class A competition.

Baby Phoenix B-102
Designed by Frank Ehling and produced as a kit by JASCO in 1949. Model has a 35" wingspan, and has proven to be a very stable, easy to trim Free Flight model. 61 laser cut parts:

1/2A Kiwi B-103
A high performance low pylon model capable of handling the hottest engines, with an almost straight-up climb. Based on a 1954 design by Mahieu the BMJR kit has a 35" wingspan. 83 laser cut parts.
$41.50      Quantity

Geef 250 B-104
A low aspect ratio wing with an undercambered airfoil produces a model with a fast climb and a floating glide. Design by Dan Sabola was state-of-the-art in 1956 and selected by the National Free Flight Society for one-design competition at the 1998 United States Outdoor Free Flight Championships. BMJR kit has a 35" wingspan. 76 laser cut parts.

Honey B 600 B-107
This Honey - B comes in 2 sizes: A 60" wing span "600" for Class A with a .15-.21 engine and a "275" for 1/2 A Competition. It was selected by the NFF for One-Design Competition at the 1999 Nationals. 105 laser cut parts.

Honey B 275 B-108
This Honey - B is a "275" for 1/2 A Competition. It was selected by the NFF for One-Design Competition at the 1999 Nationals. 98 laser cut parts.
$47.50      Quantity

ZERO B-109
Designed by Toshi Matsuda, in the 1950’s, it was reported as the latest thing in model airplanes, streamlined as the atomic age, and capable of utilizing all the power available from the "super" half A engines, with a thermal riding glide. It has been selected by the NFFS for 2004 One-design competition. Model has a 42" wingspan and 257 sq. in. of area.

Amazoom B-115
A successor to the famous Amazon designed in 1948, the Amazoom is the 14th in a series of design by Stan Hill begun in 1942, and represents the culmination of development in high thrust line models finally published in 1955. Theory was that with the center of thrust, CG and center of drag nearly on the same line, the tight and, therefore, power wasting spiral climb of pylon ships would open up to a loose one-turn in five seconds and rate of climb would double. The original model was designed for FAI Competition in the 1950’s. The BMJR Amazoom, has a 36 1/2" wingspan with an area of 158 in. sq. intended for 1/4A Nostalgia competition. Construction features a diagonal rib configuration with sheeted leading edge creating a very ridged warp resistant wing and stab. Fuselage is strong yet simple to construct. The Amazoom has proven to be a predictable model to trim and is definitely astatically pleasing.

Jaysbird 250 B-116
The Jaysbird was designed by Vic Jays of England for FAI competition in 1956, published in the 1957-58 Zaic Yearbook, was approved for nostalgia competition in 1992, and voted NFFS power model of the year in 1996. The 1/2A version presented here is based on work and plan by Frank Parmenter in 1992. The long tail moment, rear-mounted rudder, and geodesic wing construction asre features found today on AMA power models. In fact there was an attempt to ban the design as being too modern for Nostalgia. With a 45" wingspan and 250 sq.in. of area the Jaysbird is great for both 1/2A and small A engines.

J-Hawk B-121
The J-Hawk was designed by Ray Combs in the 1950’s and was approved for Nostalgia competition by the NFFS Nostalgia committee in 2007. Model is relatively small with a 35” span and only 232 sq. in. of wing area originally intended for a Wasp .049. Hand Launch Gliders influenced the design with a low aspect ratio of only 5 ˝ and a thin flat bottom airfoil., producing a model with a fast climb. Flying weight is in the 6 oz. range, ideal for Early Nostalgia competition.

Kiwi-A B-123
The thin flat-bottom airfoil of Goldberg's Comet Interceptor was the influence accredited to Lew Mahieu Kiwi design. As an employee of K&B in 1954 when the Torpedo Green Head 15 was introduced, Lew designed the 48" span 375 in.sq. Kiwi to meet the then FAI Free Flight rules with the new engine. The FAI Kiwi was K&B's first and only venture into the competition kit market which was eventually sold to Guillow. Having experience with the 1/2A Kiwi; when we acquired an OS Max 15, and remembering our K&B Kiwi go OOS from Fort Meyers FL in 1964 with a TD .15, we were ready for another A size Kiwi. fling weight of our Kiwi is 15.1 oz. The BMJR Kiwi-A is true to the original design with the only changes to accommodate laser cutting technology for ease of assembly. The BMJR Kiwi-A is perfect for NFFS class A Nostalgia and the new Vintage FAI event

T-Bird 600 B-125
The T-Bird 600 was inspired by Gene Wicks flying his 600 at Palm Bay. After developing the files for laser cutting the stab ribs, and under cambered wing ribs, we felt it only fair to offer these as a short kit to other modelers. Your kit contains the 13 laser cut parts sheets shown below and Full Size plans re-done in CAD from a well used set. A complete list of material needed to complete the model (less covering, engine, timer and tank) is included on sheet 2. Only deviation from the original plan has been to use 1/8 ply instead of 1/4 balsa for the dihedral braces and the recommendation of .007 carbon fiber on top and bottom of the spars. Also detail for wing hold down and stab dethermilizeer have been left to the discretion of the builder.

T-Bird 408 B-126
Russ Hanson designed the T-Bird in 1956 at 324 sq. in. for 1/2A. In the 1980’s Ron Sharpton began “scaling” the design for Nostalgia Competition all the way up to a 1200 with a .McCoy 60. His 408 came out on top at the Nats 4 times. Several years ago, Russ and Ron approached me at Palm Bay about cutting a 408 kit. At the time we were just learning CAD and did not have our own laser and had to decline. Last year, Gene Wicks showed up with a copy of the original 408 “scaled “ plan which was the inspiration we need for this model.

Slim Zeek B-127
The Slim Zeek designed by Dan Sobala is an approved Nostalgia design that also qualifies for the new Vintage FAI event. In 1955 Dan flew his Slim Zeek in the international team trials missing a slot due to timer trouble in the 4th round. The Slim Zeek uses the elliptical wing with an under-cambered airfoil, and tail from the Lew Mahieu designed Zeek, as kitted by Premium Mfg. Co. To reduce weight and drag the fuselage and frontal area were reduced to produce the “Slim” Zeek. The 1955 FAI rules required an ROG takeoff so Dan devised a retracting wheel design. Today utilization of a typical skid is more common. 50” Wing Span , Area 397” sq.
